Classes begin with age-appropriate warm-ups, mobility work and movement activities to prepare students safely for training.

Students practise stances, blocks, strikes, kicks and combinations, with instruction adapted to their age, confidence and level of experience.

Training develops coordination, balance, stamina, concentration and self-control through varied drills, partner work and structured activities.

Beginners do not need to buy specialist equipment before their first class. Comfortable clothing that allows easy movement is suitable for a free trial.

Karate uniform, comfortable clothing and water bottle for a first SMJKC class

Wear a T-shirt and tracksuit bottoms or other comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. Training is normally barefoot.

Children who decide to continue will need a suitable karate uniform. We will explain what is required and help families choose the correct size before buying.

Bring a clearly labelled bottle of water. Any protective equipment needed for particular activities will be explained as students progress.

Students progress through the grading system as their skills, understanding and confidence develop. Grading is based on readiness rather than simply how long someone has attended.

Gradings take place when instructors believe a student is ready to demonstrate the required standard safely and confidently. Children are supported to understand what they are working towards and how they can continue improving.
